The San Bernardino City Unified School District board opened its March meeting by recognizing San Bernardino High School's girls varsity water polo team after the program reached the CIF Southern Section Division 5 championship. Maria Garcia, the district's communications manager, called the student athletes and coaches forward for certificates and photos and thanked Assemblymember Eloise Gomez Reyes and Supervisor Joe Baca Jr. for sending recognition certificates.
The board's presentation listed individual team members and acknowledged head coach Jason Mendoza and assistant coaches Luis Montiel and Raven Solard for their leadership. "We're incredibly proud of their hard work and the example that they set for students across our district," Maria Garcia said.
Later in public comment, the board heard a multi-student presentation from the Teen Music Workshop, which described performance highlights including an appearance at the National School Board meeting in Atlanta and an upcoming Guitar Center Foundation Spirit of Community Music Awards show at Sturgis Theater on March 15. Program director Jumaane Ches and students Sarah Kazi, Kaylin Ruiz and others described how the workshop has given them professional performance experience and formed partnerships that expose scholars to college and career pathways.
"These young artists are learning from professionals and getting to do some professional gigs," a staff member said as the group played a short video showcasing student performances. Students also announced a performance at the Savon Theater in Beverly Hills in April and presented a tribute guitar to Terry Komnick on behalf of the workshop.
Board members praised the athletes and the music students during board reports, noting the programs' role in building leadership and skills. The board will continue following district efforts to capture and celebrate offsite student achievements under a follow-up request made later in the meeting.
