Wiseburn leaders say new sports complex is nearly ready but insurance must clear before public use

District leadership told the Wiseburn Unified School District board on March 26 that the new sports complex is substantially complete and that the district is working through final insurance and operations steps before the field can be used for public events.

Deputy Superintendent Nisha described community tours and praised the facility, saying the field is a major new resource: “kids, the biggest play this is the biggest classroom in our district.” She said district staff are discussing cost-sharing and upkeep with local leagues and exploring a classified facility-attendant position to serve as an on-site liaison and help manage events.

Nisha told the board the remaining technical step is transferring liability from construction insurance to district insurance; the district cannot put people on the field for events until that rollover occurs. She estimated the timing to be within a few days to a week and said the district is exploring a soft opening connected to the "Rock Around the Block" community event but had not made any commitments.

On costs, board discussion referenced figures ranging from approximately $15 million to more than $17 million for the project; trustees described the facility as a major capital investment and noted replacement and ongoing maintenance costs will need long-term planning. The board also thanked the citizen bond oversight committee for recent site tours and noted related site improvements at Del Air Park and other bond-funded projects.

What happens next: District staff said they will continue to finalize insurance and operating agreements with leagues and report back with firm dates once the insurance rollover and operational details are completed.
