Lexington County Council approves appointments, grant applications and multimillion-dollar road transfer

Committee recommendations and grants: The Health and Human Services committee recommended approval to apply for a Library Services and Technology Act tuition reimbursement grant on behalf of full-time employee Lauren Jordan. Committee materials indicated the grant would reimburse 66% of Jordan’s tuition—$1,546—for her spring 2026 semester enrollment in a master’s program.
The committee also recommended applying for a 2026 hazardous materials emergency preparedness planning and training grant in the amount of $5,950 to bolster hazardous-material response capabilities.
Municipal judge agreement: The justice committee moved to recommend full council approval of a municipal judge agreement allowing Judge Larry Saunders to serve as a backup municipal judge for the town of Lexington; the council approved the recommendation.
Budget amendments and transfers: County administrative staff presented three budget adjustments for approval: a $75,946 increase to establish the emergency management budget for a 2025 LEMPG grant award; $30,382 to record funds received from traded/confiscated firearms used to obtain 4 Glock pistols and a weapon sight; and a $5,695,466 appropriation transfer to cover road and infrastructure projects associated with an MIT grant, specifically earmarked for Backpike Road, South Central County Road, Culler Road and Charlestown Road.
Council action and next steps: The motions to approve the consent items and budget adjustments were moved, seconded and approved by roll-call vote during the meeting.
