Colton Joint Unified honors students with perfect scores and school growth awards

Board President Flores and the Colton Joint Unified School District board opened their Feb. 19 meeting with a student celebration that honored individual students who earned perfect scores on state assessments and recognized 10 school sites for notable growth in English language arts and mathematics.
Dr. Tamara Frazier, assistant principal at Slover Mountain High School, introduced ASB leaders and students Leslie Hernandez and Damien Hernandez, who described Slover as a place that gave them a "second chance" and helped them reengage with school. "They gave me a second chance to take it serious and get a fresh start," Damien Hernandez said.
The board presented district certificates to students who achieved perfect scores in ELA, math and science and then called up school teams from 10 sites that met the district’s "10,10,95,95" growth goal. The assistant superintendent for elementary student services said the awards included individual certificates and that site teams would receive recognition and photographs with the board.
Board members praised the students and staff. Board member Ibarra said the results "validate a lot of what we're doing" and called the students "the future." Board member Fuentes singled out student leadership at Slover and thanked staff for producing the showcase.
The presentation also named several students and principals from Terrace View, Abraham Lincoln, Paul Rogers, Ulysses Grant, Ruth Grimes, Grand Terrace, Walter Zimmerman, Jobaka Middle School, Grimes High School and others who earned individual or site-level honors.
The celebration ended with group photos and congratulatory remarks. After a short recess the board resumed its regular agenda.
The board did not take policy action tied to the awards; the recognition was ceremonial and intended to highlight student achievement and site-level growth.
