Board approves construction management extension with Balfour Beatty and several change orders

The Redondo Beach Unified School District board voted Dec. 16 to extend construction management services with Balfour Beatty for six months at a reduced cost of $665,000 and to approve change orders for ongoing projects, including the RUHS fencing project and the Toledo Elementary retaining wall.
District staff said the extension reduces the originally contracted staffing level and estimated about $300,000 in savings versus the initial six‑month agreement. Trevor Perry of Balfour Beatty told trustees the firm will focus on front‑end constructability reviews and specifications to reduce future change orders and control cost and schedule.
The board also approved a change order for the RUHS fencing project to keep the work on schedule and a final change order for the Toledo Elementary retaining wall project after final invoices slightly exceeded the original bid by just over 10%, which triggers formal board approval to close the project.
Trustees stressed the importance of minimizing disruption at school sites during construction and thanked staff and the contractor for coordination. The student advisory vote was recorded as "Aye."
