Parents ask Wethersfield board to revisit December break amid concerns about learning loss and childcare

Josie Peruta of 88 Copper Mill asked the board to formally review the 2026–27 December vacation schedule, which she said creates “a 16‑day learning gap” when weekends are included after snow day makeups. Peruta said the extended break risks learning loss, shifts instruction further into June in buildings that lack full climate control, and creates childcare and financial burdens for families. She asked the board to reopen the calendar decision and to issue a ParentSquare survey so parents can provide input.
Sally Keating read comments from Sarah Smith, a Hanmer parent, who reported fourth‑grade classes of 26–27 students following a reduction from three sections to two. Keating asked whether the district had considered restoring a third section for that cohort or, if not feasible, what consistent instructional supports would be provided now and as the cohort advances.
Board members acknowledged the concerns and several said they would put the issues back on the board’s radar. Trustee Amanda said she shared the concern about a long December break and would like the matter revisited; other trustees noted the board can form a subcommittee or request more information at a future meeting. No formal action was taken during the meeting.
