Board recognizes PTA Reflections finalists and outlines plans to expand participation

The La Mesa–Spring Valley board spotlighted PTA Reflections finalists at the start of its June 10 meeting and heard from Principal Nakey and Michelle Juarez, a La Presa kindergarten/first-grade teacher who leads the program.
The presenters described Reflections as a long‑standing National PTA program that supports student creativity across six categories: visual arts, music composition, literature, film production, photography and dance choreography. They said La Presa has hosted the district Reflections show the last two years and described next year’s theme, “We belong.”
Michelle Juarez said the district plans to centralize part of the submission process so that schools without a reflections coordinator have a simpler way to participate: "Next year, we're going to try to do one form for the whole school district," she said, adding that centralizing entries will make it easier to forward winning pieces to the next level.
The board invited the student finalists to the front of the room for photos and distributed goodie bags to recognize participants.
What happens next: staff said they will share the Reflections slideshow and explore district-wide coordination to boost participation in underrepresented categories such as film production and choreography.
