Calexico Unified gets Measure Q construction update for Calexico High School

At a Calexico Unified School District board meeting, trustees received a detailed construction update on the Measure Q Calexico High School project, including photos of recent demolition, underground utilities work and site preparation for new academic buildings.
CBO Luis Dela Torre introduced the update and turned the presentation over to Sanders Inc. and Balfour Beatty, who walked the board through site photos and renderings. Jimmy Sanders of Sanders Inc. said the current work focuses on underground utilities, rough grading and pad preparation that are necessary before new buildings can be erected.
“Starting with the photos here, this is when we started the demolition,” Joe Triolo of Balfour Beatty noted and described conduit installation, sewer, fire, gas and communications lines being placed under the campus. Triolo added that inspectors and a contractor compound are on site and the team is coordinating to minimize disruption to students and staff.
Presenters told the board that increment 1—site utilities, excavation and related work—began in December and is scheduled to complete in June. After that, the district will return to the board with bid results and a detailed construction schedule; the presenters estimated roughly 18–24 months for completion of the building phase once construction starts.
Trustees asked about bid timing, weekly coordination and communication with the high school. The construction team said there are standing weekly meetings (in-person and by Zoom) with district staff and the oversight committee and that staff will present bids to the board in June to enable mobilization in July.
The board and presenters emphasized the challenge of building in the middle of an active high school campus but said the temporary inconveniences will lead to upgraded academic, STEM and multipurpose facilities for students.
What’s next: staff and the construction team will return with bid documents in June and a more detailed schedule for building construction and subcontracting.
