Elk Grove Unified board renames Valley High HealthTech center for Dr. Arturo Garzon

The Elk Grove Unified School District board unanimously approved a proposal to rename the Valley High School HealthTech Community Health Center the "Dr. Arturo Garzon Community Health Center." The motion was moved and seconded during the March 31 meeting and carried without opposition.
District staff said the HealthTech Academy, established in 1993, has produced numerous graduates who pursued careers in medicine and allied health. Staff framed the renaming as a way to connect current students to an alum's example of service and community health work.
"Dr. Arturo Garzon, class of 2014, exemplified leadership, compassion and dedication," said Rodney Black, the HealthTech Academy teacher and coordinator, who asked the board to approve the renaming. Black told trustees that Garzon mentored students, led community health outreach projects and returned to serve local patients after medical training.
Board materials and staff referenced the board's policy and administrative regulation governing facility namings; staff said the recommendation came at the request of Valley High staff and community members and was consistent with district procedures.
Trustees offered brief thanks and the board president called for a motion. After a voice vote, the president announced the motion passed unanimously and the board moved on to the next agenda item.
The renaming will be reflected in district communications; staff did not specify a separate formal dedication date during the meeting.
