The board proclaimed June as Adopt‑a‑Cat Month, praised trap‑neuter‑return volunteers and approved a related resolution after Associated Humane Societies thanked commissioners for funding and TNR outcomes.
The Essex County Board of County Commissioners proclaimed June as "Adopt‑a‑Cat Month" and acknowledged community groups and volunteers who support trap‑neuter‑return (TNR) efforts.
Brian Hackett, director of government and community relations for Associated Humane Societies, thanked Commissioner Cooper and county leaders for supporting spay/neuter and vaccination programs, saying the work has helped place adoptable cats and reduce euthanasia. "Thanks to that support, we're able to actually get more of these adoptable cats into loving homes," he said.
Vice President Cooper introduced the proclamation, named several volunteers and community partners and asked them to come forward for certificates and photos. Commissioners moved the resolution and approved it by roll call.
The proclamation is honorary and intended to raise public awareness about TNR and pet adoption. County staff said funding and operational details for TNR and related programs will continue to be administered through the Department of Health and cooperating nonprofit partners.
