The Lexington County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a sign-height variance for a business on Highway 321 to replace a longstanding nonconforming sign with a new display that meets static and LED display requirements while lowering total height to a permitted level.
Walt McPherson told members the existing sign had been out of compliance and, following storm damage, the owner seeks to bring the display back into compliance with a new 12-by-5 display and header that would bring the sign's total height to roughly 17 feet. Staff noted the request reduces an earlier, larger proposal and aims to align the sign with safety and visibility needs along the corridor.
Isaac Edmonds, representing the applicant, said the company planned to reuse the existing column and provided engineering drawings to show how the sign would be mounted; he added that the replacement will help the business reestablish its presence after the storm. The board discussed setback and sight-line issues, and then voted to approve the variance as presented; roll call recorded all members present voting in favor.
The approval allows the replacement display described in the application; final permitting will require engineered plans and staff verification of setback and mounting details.
