Columbia CUSD 4 board approves weekly early-release Wednesdays to give teachers regular collaborative time

The Columbia CUSD 4 school board voted to adopt weekly early-release Wednesdays intended to give teachers a consistent hour for collaborative planning, data review and aligned instruction across grades pre-K–12.

Administrators told the board the model uses staggered dismissal times by building and a three-tier coalition structure — building administrators, building coalition teams and CUSD teams — to support sustained, districtwide instructional alignment. "Certain students deserve best practices, and by giving our teachers set time every week, we guarantee regular, consistent reflection on best practices," a district presenter said during the presentation.

Board members pressed on logistics. One administrator flagged childcare as a known obstacle and said the district is working with Eagle Zone and other local partners to expand supervised spaces on Wednesdays, using a mix of high-school helpers, adult supervisors and community providers. Teachers who spoke during the meeting said past early-out Wednesdays had helped departments stay aligned and that weekly, protected time would support deeper, more effective collaboration.

The board made the motion to approve the early-release Wednesdays, the motion was seconded, and a roll-call vote recorded a majority of 'Yes' votes with one member absent. The vote carried. The administration said training and nonnegotiable district expectations would be paired with building-level flexibility so each school can use the time that best fits its needs.

The district will proceed with implementation planning and community outreach on childcare and transportation logistics; the board did not set a public start date during the meeting.
