Students, staff highlight Best Buddies inclusion program at Columbia Middle School

Courtney Miller, assistant principal at Columbia Middle School, introduced the Best Buddies club during the building report and brought program sponsors and students to talk about activities and outcomes.
Sarah Brandenberger, identified as a Best Buddies sponsor, described the program’s goal of promoting inclusion and said the club holds monthly meetings that include lessons on sensory needs and communication supports. Staff brought students to demonstrate the program and share photos of events such as a holiday party and Valentine’s activities.
Student speakers said the program helped them make friends and learn how to communicate with classmates who use alternative‑communication tools. "This club is really cool for people to make friends that they might have had a hard time talking to before," Angela Wiley said. Students noted participation in community events such as Ace Olympics and regular lunchtime social activities.
Courtney Miller said the program has been a positive addition that the school hopes to expand, and she thanked volunteers and staff who support the activities.
