During the public hearing, students and staff from Gateway described student leadership and community engagement programs. Student speaker Jada Santa Maria said participation in the Community Engagement Initiative helped students learn that "every voice in our community has...impact on shaping the future." Teachers and parents testified about inclusive instruction and special education responsiveness. Newcastle Elementary District Superintendent Sean Healy, Gateway’s prior authorizer, told trustees the school has demonstrated sound fiscal management and academic performance and urged the district to approve the renewal.
Board members thanked the speakers and said staff will review the petition and return the matter to the board per the district's charter renewal process.
