Board opts to appoint trustee rather than hold special election; schedules candidate interviews and elects a new clerk

Facing a trustee vacancy, the Travis Unified board voted to fill the seat by appointment rather than incur the cost of a special election.
Staff outlined the statutory path: the board may appoint a replacement or call a special election (the latter would be at district expense and could cost between roughly $91,000 and $274,000 depending on timing). Trustees voted to proceed with appointment and directed staff to post for applicants and to have an ad hoc committee (less than a quorum) screen candidate eligibility (residency and voter registration per statute).
The board set candidate interviews for the Sept. 9, 2025 board meeting and asked the ad hoc committee to recommend eligible applicants before that meeting. The motion to appoint was moved and seconded and recorded as passing.
Separately, the board elected Suzanne Schwartz to serve as clerk through the December 2025 board meeting. The clerk’s primary duties include serving as the second signatory on official documents and assisting with meeting administration.
Trustees said they will present any eligible candidates for interview in public session at the September meeting and complete the appointment at that time.
