The Newark Teachers Association formally opened negotiations Feb. 17 by reading a sunshine notice into the public record and outlining bargaining priorities. Megan McMillan, the association's bargaining chair, told the board her team will prioritize compensation, class size, workday and safety articles, along with leaves, special education protections, evaluation systems and reassignment/transfer language.
McMillan said the association represents 223 educators and is working without a current contract; the team provided an ordered list of articles the union intends to open and confirmed three initial dates to meet management beginning March 25, with requests for additional dates in March or mid-April. The union emphasized student supports and teacher retention as targets of bargaining.
Superintendent and staff acknowledged receipt and said management will respond and schedule negotiation sessions; both sides framed the next steps as the start of a formal bargaining process under the Educational Employment Relations Act.
