Board approves pool of four architectural firms for upcoming facilities projects

The Newark Unified Board of Education approved Feb. 17 a recommended pool of four architectural firms for future facilities projects after staff reviewed 17 proposals and interviewed shortlisted candidates.
Staff said the pool approach lets the district solicit project-specific proposals from the prequalified firms and select the best fit for each scope. The firms listed in the packet (as read to the board) included a local firm listed as "19 6 architects," Finney Architects, HY Architects and SVA Architect Services; staff noted most firms will subcontract engineering services depending on project scope.
Board members asked whether selected firms would act as prime contractor or purely provide architectural services; staff replied it depends on project needs and emphasized a separate project-manager RFP will be used to provide program oversight and reporting.
The motion to approve the four-firm pool passed by roll-call vote (6 ayes). Staff said the pool will be used for upcoming modernization and a likely swimming-pool project referenced in the facilities master plan.
