Board members press for a fiscal plan after hearing $454,000 speech-and-debate vendor contract

Board members extensively questioned the districtpurchase order listed for Advantage Communications, a vendor providing speech and debate coaching and event support. Trustee Dela Torre raised the programcost and urged exploring alternatives that would build internal capacity rather than permanently relying on an external contractor. "It does come at a cost," Dela Torre said, asking whether staff had begun shadowing Advantage Communications or training district teachers to sustain the program in the future.

District staff said teacher coaches are already involved in training sessions and the district has begun fundraising to subsidize costs; Dr. Lynn said teacher coaches work alongside Advantage coaches and staff have taken steps to build local capacity. The clerk noted the program serves over 800 students districtwide, a figure trustees used to calculate an approximate per‑student cost (the board discussion recorded roughly $567 per student). Board members asked staff to provide a quantitative analysis of participation and per‑student cost, as well as options to reduce vendor reliance while preserving program quality.

Chair emphasized the program's competitive success and the need for objective evaluation, and trustees agreed to direct staff to prepare information about participation counts, funding sources (including recovery grants) and a forward plan to enable a "soft landing" if grant funds end. No vote to cancel the vendor contract was taken at the meeting; trustees left the contract on the consent calendar after discussion and moved forward with the consent agenda.
