District to pilot two K–6 math programs; teachers and board to review before April recommendation

Saugus Union School District staff told trustees on Dec. 16 they plan a phased pilot of two K–6 math programs after three years of professional development aimed at preparing teachers for the state’s new math framework.
Carol McElroy and Casey Matlastis, the district’s math TOSAs, summarized the vetting process: staff limited choices to K–6 programs with Spanish components and high EdReports ratings, surveyed teachers’ priorities, convened a representative pilot committee and scheduled six‑week classroom pilots. The committee selected Classroom Mathematics and Envision to pilot; teachers will run a six‑week trial of classroom mathematics after winter break, then switch to Envision. The pilot committee expects to make a recommendation to the board in April.
Trustee Griese asked to preview the two program options prior to public viewing; district staff said samples will be available in the district office and a public viewing window will be scheduled prior to any final adoption. Staff said the intention is to support teachers with pre‑service and summer professional development so classrooms are ready for full implementation in 2026–27 if the board adopts a program.
What happens next: pilots commence after winter break, a recommendation is expected in April, and the board will provide public viewing opportunities before making a final adoption vote for implementation next school year.
