After wide debate, District 186 board rejects starting school during the fair and adopts later calendar

The board first considered option B — a calendar that would start students August 19 (three days before the fair ends) with split parent‑teacher conferences — but the motion failed on a 6–1 vote. Several board members voiced concerns about the absence of an operational transportation and safety plan for the fair period and the difficulty of implementing such a plan while onboarding a new superintendent.
Board members also raised the equity and fundraising implications for groups that fundraise at the fair. One board member noted research from the ABC club showing that local student groups’ gatework over three years produced tens of thousands of dollars for clubs and school programs and that shifting or eliminating those slots would reduce revenues for extracurriculars.
The board then considered option C, which starts the 2026–27 school year on August 24 (the Monday after the fair). Option C passed unanimously, 7–0; the board instructed staff to develop multi‑year calendar planning and contingency safety and transportation plans in case an earlier start is reconsidered.
The vote concluded an extended calendar discussion that included written petitions and a robust public comment record. Board members said they would seek a broader and more geographically representative calendar committee going forward and requested more lead time for future calendar deliberations so parents and school groups can plan.
