At the March 25 meeting of the South Plainfield Board of Education, the board watched a video and heard an original preschool song and saw student performances from Franklin School’s fourth-grade "Living Wax Museum." Superintendent Cascio opened the presentations and thanked staff and families for their work supporting the programs.
A representative of the South Plainfield preschool program introduced the preschool video and the song "We Are the Tiny Tigers," saying, "We are incredibly proud of our students and the growth they continue to make as kind, confident and curious learners." Board members were given lyric sheets to follow along with the video.
Franklin School’s gifted-and-talented teacher, Mrs. DeMarcello, described the Living Wax Museum as the culmination of a unit called "What Is an Achiever," in which students researched a historical or contemporary figure and presented a first-person monologue. Mrs. DeMarcello said, "These exceptional students have worked very hard on this project and I'm glad they get to showcase their efforts tonight." Students who performed included Dominic Cruz, Sabrina Gonzalez, Giselle Greer, Christopher Miller and Bryce Vito.
Student representative Sofia Ditabli delivered a report on spring activities and recent accomplishments across the district. Ditabli noted Winter Guard competition placements and that the unit will host the Tournament Indoor Association’s North and Central Jersey regional championships on April 29. She also listed athletic accomplishments — state qualifiers in wrestling, season records for boys and girls basketball, boys swim results and girls bowling honors — and reminded the community about upcoming events including prom on June 4, an April 1 financial aid workshop and an April 22 college and career fair.
Superintendent Cascio also reminded families that preschool lottery registration is open through 4 p.m. on April 20. Registrants must be South Plainfield residents at the time of registration; children must be 3 years old by Oct. 1 to enter the 3-year-old program and 4 years old by Oct. 1 to enter the 4-year-old program. The lottery drawing is scheduled for May 18 and results will be posted on the district website; a waiting list is expected.
Board members and meeting attendees thanked the students and staff for the presentations. The meeting proceeded to other business after the presentations.
