Vernon ISD trustees review ACT, TSIA results and curriculum rollout; district partners with ChalkTalk

Vernon Independent School District trustees on Nov. 10 heard presentations on student assessment results, classroom learning-walk findings and curriculum resources intended to boost college- and career-readiness scores.
Curriculum and instruction staff member Sarah Swatzell summarized a LASO Cycle 3 learning walk conducted in October by Region 9 representatives and VISD administrators, saying observers spent about 10 minutes per classroom and that a “not observed” mark did not necessarily mean a practice was absent. She highlighted positives — including that teachers are using Bluebonnet Learning materials for Tier 1 instruction and are on pace with the scope and sequence — and identified opportunities for more student-to-student discourse and clearer lesson framing.
RaeAnn Stevens presented Vernon High School ACT and TSIA data for classes of 2025–27, reporting that the Class of 2025 produced a top ACT score of 30 and several other scores of 24 or higher; the highest ACT score so far for the Class of 2026 is 25. Stevens said the district has partnered with ChalkTalk to deploy daily bell ringers, weekly TSIA focus lessons for targeted courses (Geometry–Honors, Algebra II, English II–Honors, English III) and intensive ACT bootcamps during WIN; a senior ACT School Day on Oct. 8 was supported by those interventions, and a junior bootcamp will run in late winter ahead of spring testing dates.
Swatzell also provided an overview of Bluebonnet RLA and Math RBIS and showed video examples of the curriculum in practice. Trustees received the reports; the presentation materials and detailed data were included in the board packet and were summarized during the meeting.
