Bayonne School District board opens workshop, hears Kean University partnership update and plans for LIFT literacy resolution

The Bayonne School District’s open workshop convened at 5:30 p.m., with trustees and administrators reviewing program updates and previewing a literacy resolution the board will consider later in the meeting.
Dr. Brent said 20 Scholars Academy students were recognized at a recent Kean University program and showed a short video of the event. "We would love to continue this partnership with Kean University with 20 additional students, seventh and eighth grade students, in February," Dr. Brent said, describing plans to expand the district’s participation and student opportunities.
The expansion, board members said, would also include professional development opportunities for teachers. Superintendent Nee thanked the board, teachers and administrators for supporting such programs and encouraged staff to sign up for an artificial-intelligence professional development session scheduled for January 2. "There’s no shortage of need of our students and the educational opportunities that they’re given," Nee said.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Degnan told the board it would see a resolution later that evening related to the district’s application for the LIFT program — identified in the meeting as the "Literacy Initiative for Families and Communities Together." She described the planned services as programming for children ages 1 to 3 at the public library, the Bayonne Youth Center and a community day nursery, where teachers will model reading activities and provide resources to parents. "That is basically a program that will happen at the library, the Bayonne Youth Center, and the community day nursery to provide modeling and reading activities to children ages 1 to 3," Degnan said. The resolution was introduced for consideration but no vote or formal action on it took place during the open portion.
Dr. Brent also recapped recent events, saying a Cycle Motor Day organized by G&T coaches was "a huge success" and that biliteracy testing is planned for January. A special services staff member noted that resolutions on student placements are confidential, announced a CPAC (Citizens’ Parent Advisory Council) meeting for parents to share concerns after the break, and thanked special education professionals for their work.
President Davenport thanked administrators for pursuing additional opportunities for students and offered the board’s thoughts for those affected by the Bondi Beach incident.
The board adjourned the open portion of the workshop at 5:37 p.m., saying it would reconvene at 6:00 p.m.
