Dr. Vivian Rodriguez was elected president of the Morris School District Board of Education during the district’s reorganization meeting, winning a roll-call vote after an earlier nomination for Katie Cole failed.
The board first considered a nomination for Katie (Petey) Cole; that vote did not reach the majority threshold. A subsequent roll-call vote produced six "yes" votes for Dr. Rodriguez and the motion carried. "Thank you," Dr. Rodriguez said after members congratulated her.
During the same reorganization session the board approved motions 5 through 13 as a slate. The items included adopting a code of ethics for board members, adopting Robert’s Rules of Order as the parliamentary guide, continuing all district policies and handbooks in force immediately prior to the reorganization, and authorizing the assistant board secretary (or in the secretary’s absence the president or vice president) to act as board secretary when needed.
The board also approved administrative authorizations that allow the business administrator/board secretary to approve bids, account transfers, payment of bills, construction change orders and travel on an emergency basis between meetings (with a report and ratification at the next business meeting). The superintendent was authorized to employ personnel temporarily to fill vacancies between meetings with subsequent board ratification.
The slate included a motion setting photocopy fees in compliance with state statutes, a scheduled calendar of regular Monday evening meetings (with closed session at 6:30 p.m. and regular business at 7:30 p.m.), and designation of the Daily Record and TAPinto Morristown (and, for broader circulation, the Star-Ledger) as official or secondary newspapers for district notices.
Board members moved and seconded the slate and approved it by roll-call vote; the clerk announced the results. The approved motions are administrative and procedural and do not themselves change policy or budget allocations.
