NVUSD board adopts AI policy after debate; Trustee Water votes no

The Napa Valley Unified School District Board of Education on Friday adopted new Board Policy 0441 governing the district’s use of artificial intelligence after trustees debated the policy’s goals and risks.

Trustee Reiser moved to approve the policy and Trustee Martin seconded; the board then discussed potential harms and policy framing before voting to approve the measure. "One of the biggest educational problems we're facing right now is the fact that we have students who cannot access a long printed work," Trustee Water said during discussion, arguing that AI risks encouraging students to "cut corners" and raising broad privacy and equity concerns. Water registered a formal opposition on the final vote.

Trustee Martin and other trustees framed the new policy as an initial framework rather than a final rule, emphasizing that guidance and classroom best practices will follow. "This is simply the beginning of a framework of how we're going to use this technology in the classroom," Martin said, noting the technology committee's work and that the policy is intended to be refined as tools and evidence evolve.

Board President Elva Gonzalez Maris called the vote after discussion; trustees approved the policy and the motion passed with Trustee Water recorded as opposed. No public comments were received on the item during the meeting.

District officials described the AI policy as a governance framework that will be accompanied by later work to define classroom practices, teacher supports, privacy safeguards and implementation details. The board’s action does not in itself approve any specific classroom tools or contracts; those would require subsequent administrative steps or agenda items.
