Board certifies election results; Mary Jane Desmond elected president, Severio Sam Maggio elected vice president

The Bayonne Board of Education certified the results of the Nov. 4, 2025 school election and administered oaths to the winners, then elected new board officers at a meeting held in the Nicholas Aresco Community School auditorium.
Board attorney Mr. Corio read the certified results and named the winners, saying, “I certify that at the annual school district election held on Tuesday, 11/04/2025, the registered voters of the city of Bayonne did elect Mary Jane Desmond, Hector Gonzalez, and Severio Sam Maggio to be members of the Bayonne Board of Education for a period of 3 years, commencing this January 2026, and elected William Bill Young to be a member of the Bayonne Board of Education for a period of 2 years commencing this January 2026.” Newly elected members were asked to step forward for the oath of office.
After the oath was administered, the board proceeded to elect officers. A trustee nominated Mary Jane Desmond for president; the nomination was seconded and the trustees voted by roll call. The board polled trustees individually and the motion carried; the moderator and trustees congratulated Trustee Desmond on her election as board president.
The board followed the same process to elect a vice president. A transcript entry records a trustee nominating “Sam Aldean” for vice president, and that nomination was seconded; later, trustees moved and seconded a motion to elect Trustee Maggio as vice president and the board voted. The transcript shows at least one trustee voting "no" during the vice-president roll call; Trustee Maggio was declared elected and congratulated. The meeting record contains inconsistent naming between the initial nomination and the final election roll call; the minutes and audio should be checked to reconcile that discrepancy.
The actions on officer selection were procedural and limited to internal board organization; no policy changes were enacted in these votes. The board will proceed with its regular schedule of meetings and committee work as discussed later in the session.
