Board approves consent and finance items, discusses 2627 calendar and Juneteenth scheduling

The Bordentown Regional Board of Education approved a slate of routine consent and finance items, discussed calendar scheduling for the 2627 school year including Juneteenth alignment, and heard the superintendent's report on assessments and a memorandum of agreement with law enforcement.

The chair opened the consent agenda covering 14 items and, after a motion and second, the board voted to approve the package. Later the board voted to approve remaining personnel items (2'2) and business and finance items (business and finance items 1'7) with the chair announcing the motions carried.

During the superintendent's report, the superintendent (Doctor Forsofford) described routine twice-yearly self-assessments that summarize staff sense of school performance and highlighted an MOA with law enforcement and the county prosecutor "where basically all the entities are working together," he said, describing the document as a statement of information-sharing responsibilities.

Board members and attendees discussed calendar logistics for the 2627 draft calendar. The superintendent said the calendar committee had made an adjustment so middle school promotion would fall on a Friday and noted the district scheduled an in-service on Presidents' Day this year (and planned to do so for 2627) to avoid pushing the academic year into August. Members raised concerns about the late notice for schedule changes that affected summer camp childcare and urged earlier communication to families.

Board members also asked whether the district could end school prior to Juneteenth; the superintendent said the district must follow both state and federal holiday rules when finalizing the calendar and explained teacher and student return dates in that context.

During the public-comment portion, several board members who attended the SBA workshop shared takeaways on the state school-funding formula, warning that a state "multiplying factor" can reduce predictability in the formula and that more transparency is needed; slides and notes will be shared with the finance committee.
