Bordentown Regional board selects Dr. James Altavella as next superintendent

The Bordentown Regional Board of Education voted to appoint Dr. James Altavella as the district's next superintendent at its meeting, and Altavella accepted the post before the board and attendees.

Board Chair (board chair) told the meeting the search had been extensive: a community survey, 21 applicants, first-round interviews with 10 candidates and a second-round presentation stage. "Doctor James Altavella ' really truly rose to the occasion," the chair said, praising his knowledge of district operations and his second-round presentation.

Board members who participated in last-phase interviews described Altavella's package as more than ideas: "He had a plan," one board member said, noting a detailed accountability and goal structure that specified ownership of tasks. Another member highlighted Altavella's experience with special education and his hands-on approach.

Following a motion and roll call on personnel item 1, the board approved the appointment and invited Dr. Altavella to speak. Dr. James Altavella thanked the board and community and said he was "deeply honored to stand before you now as the next superintendent here in Bordentown Regional." He said his priorities include building "a professional culture where our staff members thrive," communicating transparently, collaborating with stakeholders and charting "clear pathways of success for all students."

The board's vote concluded the selection process; the motion carried and Altavella addressed next steps, promising to begin the work of earning the district's trust and working with staff to implement plans presented during interviews. Attendees were invited to a brief reception after the meeting.

The appointment was taken as personnel item 1 on the agenda; the board proceeded to act on the remaining listed personnel and business items later in the meeting.
