Resident urges Hillsborough to pursue state regionalization feasibility funds before June 30

During the meetings public-comment period, resident Steve Sloan told the board he had seen a state announcement urging districts to apply for School Regionalization Efficiency Program feasibility-study funding and encouraged the board to decide quickly.
"The Department of Education as well as the Department of Community Affairs is urging school districts to apply for funding for what's called the school regionalization efficiency program," Sloan said. He said the funding would support a feasibility study and that completing a study does not obligate a district to adopt any recommendations.
Sloan noted the press release did not specify whether funding would target smaller districts under 500 students or larger districts such as Hillsborough, "which is about 7,500 students," and that the FY2026 allocation may not be repeated in FY2027. He urged the board to consider applying before the June 30, 2026 fiscal-year deadline cited in the announcement and said he would follow up with the board.
The board thanked Sloan and indicated staff would follow up after the meeting.
