Summary
The Granite Falls School District celebrated student and staff achievements March 25, recognizing multiple students across grade levels for academic progress, leadership and community service and honoring four staff 'Bridge Builders' for exceptional student support.
The Granite Falls School Board opened its March 25 meeting with a districtwide celebration recognizing third-quarter Success in Education award winners and four Bridge Builder staff honorees.
Superintendent Dr. Giesland told the audience the awards night is one of the board’s favorite events because it spotlights student achievement and staff who build strong relationships with learners. "Tonight is our favorite night as superintendent and board of directors because we get to honor so many students who are here with us," Dr. Giesland said.
Assistant Principal Dave Bancchini introduced high school honorees, describing freshman Evelyn Aguilera Fernandez as "consistent, disciplined, and a positive role model" and noting her volleyball and track participation and volunteer work. Bancchini highlighted sophomore Mason Newman for academic engagement and multi-sport commitment, and praised junior Colby Lynn Marino for a notable turnaround and leadership in student activities. Senior Ella Haxo was recognized as salutatorian with a near-complete AP course load and sustained volunteer service.
The board also acknowledged the district’s transitions program and the student-run business "Oh My Dog," where program members sell dog treats to support outings. Dr. Giesland encouraged attendees to visit the table and noted the treats "are available right out here, $5," explaining sales help support student activities.
Principals from Crossroads, the middle school, Monte Cristo and Mountain Way presented additional elementary and middle-school winners, citing improvements in literacy, strong attendance, leadership on student councils and peer tutoring. The Monte Cristo principal commended a fifth-grader for inclusion and life-skills growth; middle-school and elementary teachers highlighted academic progress and community-minded behavior.
After the awards, the board recessed for photos and refreshments and planned to resume the regular agenda.
The recognitions emphasized academic growth, leadership and inclusive practices across district schools and featured staff whose work was singled out for fostering belonging and student success. The event preceded routine board business, including a superintendent report and formal votes on district goals and a facilities contract.
