Wayne Township Public School District honors National Merit and College Board scholars

The Wayne Township Public School District Board of Education on Nov. 13 celebrated student achievement, recognizing National Merit and College Board honorees from Wayne Valley and Wayne Hills.

Michael Ruich, principal of Wayne Hills High School, said the evening would honor “two National Merit semifinalists and 24 commended students” and described the districtwide slate of AP Scholar awards. “This is one of those events where we get to celebrate our best in our schools,” Ruich said.

Jen Grimbliss, principal of Wayne Valley High School, explained the College Board’s recognition programs, including the First Generation Recognition Award, and said 20 students would be recognized in that category. “The College Board First Generation Recognition Award honors high achieving students who will be the first in their family to earn a bachelor’s degree,” Grimbliss said.

Staff members read lists of honorees from both high schools and noted common accomplishments — top AP exam scores, statewide athletic championships, leadership roles in clubs and community service projects — and the colleges students hope to attend. District presenters asked honorees and their families to gather for group photos in the lobby after names were announced.

Selected honorees mentioned in the presentation included Morgan Adrian (AP Scholar), Ari Barnes (AP Scholar with distinction) and Gavin Chen (National Merit commended student and AP Scholar with distinction). School staff emphasized the breadth of achievements across academics, arts and athletics.

Superintendent Mr. Citadino and board members thanked teachers, administrators and families for support that contributed to students’ success. The recognitions were followed by a brief recess and photography session before the board continued its regular meeting.

The board adjourned the recognition portion of the agenda and moved on to routine business and committee reports.
