Board honors outgoing members, hears committee reports and approves consent agenda

The North Brunswick Township Board of Education recognized outgoing members Zaire and Colleen Keith, received committee updates and approved its consent agenda at the Dec. 10 meeting.
Board members paid tribute to Colleen Keith for more than a decade of service, citing her role as vice president and long-term leadership on the negotiations committee. Colleague remarks described her as a steady presence and a guide for newer members. Zaire, who is leaving after one term, thanked the board, reflected on his experience and said he looks forward to completing his studies and future service in other roles.
The board approved the regular public meeting minutes from Nov. 19, 2025, and accepted administrative, student and committee reports. Highlights from committee reports included:
- Education Committee: rollout plans for a social-emotional learning pilot called Taproot (capped at 40 students per school on a first-come basis), updates on Amplify Math (grades 5—8) and ESL/pre-K instructional items; policy second readings covering interdistrict choice, library materials and public complaints.
- Business Operations: updates on referendum projects (pool dehumidifier and bathroom upgrades), HVAC control upgrades at Lynwood, favorable air-sampling results and a FY'27 budget timeline tied to a state aid announcement on Feb. 26, 2026; an elementary dismissal policy change will take effect Jan. 5.
- Human Resources: retirements and new hires on the agenda, reassignments, recruitment pathways for high-need certification areas and postings for substitute and long-term staff.
During public comment, Beth Pazner, NBTA president, said the association had access to more than $60,000 in PEP and FAST grants through the NJEA and detailed $13,429 in fall grant spending on events including meet-the-principal nights, a food pantry donation and family engagement activities. "We have access to the $60,000 and I just wanted to give you an update," Pazner said.
The board then approved the consent agenda (personnel, curriculum, finance, policy and transportation items) by roll call. No additional public business was raised before the board adjourned for the holidays.
