North Brunswick board hears HIB report showing confirmed incidents fall to 12

The North Brunswick Township Board of Education received its state‑required biannual violence, vandalism and Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) report for reporting period 1 (July 1–Dec. 31) on Feb. 4, during which the district’s anti‑bullying coordinator summarized incident counts, investigation outcomes and training efforts.
"Out of that 67 which includes all those types of incidents, there were only 12 HIB confirmed as incidents, as opposed to 20 the reporting period 1 from the 24–25 school year," said the district’s anti‑bullying coordinator, who presented the chart on pages 19–20 of the evening’s agenda. She said the total incidents figure for the period is 67 and that confirmed HIBs declined to 12.
The coordinator explained the distinction between alleged and confirmed HIB reports: alleged reports are those submitted by a parent or staff member that, on their face, meet state HIB criteria and therefore must be investigated; confirmed HIBs are those that result from that investigation. She told board members the district recorded fewer incidents that led to removals compared with the prior year and said the two‑year decline approaches roughly 180 fewer such incidents.
The presentation also listed the district’s training activities for staff and anti‑bullying specialists. The coordinator said many specialists have attended external trainings (including offerings from legal providers) and that the district conducts additional in‑house training and quarterly case reviews. She said the report and related HIB program links are posted on the district’s anti‑bullying information page and that building specialists can share resources with parents.
Board members asked a clarifying question about the next reporting period and the coordinator said the second reporting period runs Jan. 1–June 30 and that the district will return with that update in summer.
The report will be entered on the agenda for formal approval in the consent items.
