Board finds superintendent in compliance on technology monitoring; members emphasize digital citizenship and device equity

The Northshore School District board reviewed the superintendent's monitoring report for parameter 10 (technology) on March 9 and voted to find the superintendent in compliance with the parameter as certified by Dr. Justin Irish.

Dr. Irish certified the report's information as of 03/09/2026 and noted the district is revising parameter language; he recommended the board accept the compliance finding while work on updated language continues. Board members complimented a clearer report layout with embedded links and bolded headings that made the document easier to read.

Discussion emphasized three themes: device access equity, digital citizenship instruction, and cybersecurity preparedness. Board members and speakers noted that when the one-to-one device rollout was planned, an estimated 20% of secondary students lacked reliable devices; the district subsequently provided devices and support to close that gap. Directors also highlighted the district's digital citizenship curriculum (delivered through librarians) and the need to adapt guidance as generative AI and other technologies evolve.

One board member referenced the district's experience during a previous cyberattack as context for ongoing security work. Administration told the board work groups will present recommended policy-language changes to better reflect current practice and risks.

After discussion, Director Elizabeth Sotek moved to find the superintendent in compliance with parameter 10 and making adequate progress; the board approved the motion.
