Superintendent updates board on strategic plan, data tools and CTE expansion including donated flight simulator

The superintendent presented an update on the district's three-year strategic plan and highlighted steps to deepen data literacy, strengthen instructional practice and expand Career and Technical Education pathways.
The presenter said the state VISTAs public dashboard will go live Nov. 12 and the district is reviewing numbers to confirm they align with state data. "VISTAs will go live," the presenter said, and noted the district has an upcoming Zoom with the Public Education Department for guidance.
On instructional practices, the superintendent pointed to Building Thinking Classrooms and district efforts to provide executive coaching for principals and targeted classroom observations through an outside partner (CES). The district reported interim assessment improvements at both Moriarty High School and Moriarty Middle School following recent coaching and training.
The presentation also outlined expanded student supports: the board funded a student-success coach split between the middle and elementary schools to help at-risk students with attendance and related needs. The superintendent described growth in CTE and work-based learning and highlighted an Aviation Pathways donation: a flight simulator at the high school that staff say has engaged students and opened conversations about aviation careers.
"The students that were tutoring me ... are just immersed themselves in this flight simulator," the presenter said, describing hands-on engagement and pathways discussions. The board heard the update without substantive debate and was told additional strategic-plan reports will follow in November and December.
The district did not present budget figures tied to these initiatives at the meeting; staff said further detail will be provided in subsequent updates.
