Moriarty-Edgewood board approves revised graduation and discipline policies and adds cardiac emergency plan

The Moriarty-Edgewood School District board voted Oct. 21 to approve several policy updates, including revisions to graduation-exercise rules to allow tribal regalia and a new cardiac emergency response policy required by state law.

The board's second reading and approval package included a revised IKFB (graduation exercises) advisory that incorporates the state's definition of tribal regalia, a revision to JK (student discipline) to align with the graduation policy, an update to EBC (emergencies) to add cross-references, and a new JLCEC policy establishing a cardiac emergency response plan and automated external defibrillator procedures to comply with House Bill 154.

"The law defines tribal regalia to mean a tribe's traditional dress or recognized objects of religious or cultural significance, including tribal symbols, jewelry, beading, and feathers," the superintendent's presenter said while introducing the IKFB revision. Board members moved and seconded each policy advisory; each motion was approved by voice vote with no recorded opposition.

Board staff said the approved changes will be incorporated into board policy documents and the student handbooks and posted on the district website so parents and students have notice of the revised graduation guidelines and emergency-response procedures.

The approvals came without extended debate. The board addressed the policy advisories in sequence and, after routine motions and seconds, recorded the board's votes as "aye," with the president declaring the motions carried. The new JLCEC cardiac emergency policy specifically adds automated external defibrillators to cross-reference lists and establishes a district cardiac-response framework.

The district said it will update handbooks and the policy index to reflect the changes before upcoming graduation seasons and emergency-response training cycles.
