Student reps tell Tumwater board low awareness and transportation limit extracurricular participation
Summary
Student representatives and a staff summary reported generally positive views of extracurriculars but said participation is limited by low awareness, scheduling conflicts and transportation; students asked for better promotion, more non‑sport options and flexible schedules.
Student representatives and staff presented survey results showing that while many students value extracurricular activities, participation varies and is frequently limited by awareness, scheduling and transportation.
Jugal, the student representative from Black Hills High School, said an anonymous survey found an average satisfaction score of about 6 out of 10, with many students reporting they enjoy activities but that advertising is insufficient and non‑sport options are limited. Students recommended posters, announcements, school TV/network messaging, activity fairs, trial days, more flexible hours and school transportation after activities.
Staff and trustees said the district will prioritize clearer promotion of opportunities, consider expanding non‑sport offerings (examples cited included badminton, ceramics, debate and ultimate frisbee) and explore transportation and affordability barriers. Trustees praised the student reports and asked staff to develop clearer communication strategies so students know how to find and sign up for clubs and activities.
The board thanked students and presenters and moved to the public comment portion of the meeting before addressing action items; trustees noted that improved promotion and logistical supports could increase participation without large budget changes.
