Trustees emphasized that the policy requires thoughtful training for staff, clear communication to parents and students, and alignment with California law including guidance from the Attorney General’s 'Know Your Education Rights' materials. Vice President Adriana Quinones and other trustees asked the superintendent to provide an executive summary and a training timeline so parents, staff and students know what to expect. "We have to share this information with our students so they're aware," Quinones said, noting that student inquiries had already prompted trustee outreach.
Board members noted the policy’s legal complexity—federal and state law and county guidance intersect—and urged a training approach that includes staff, site administrators and families. The board’s vote was unanimous; staff will return with implementation details and a communication plan.
What happens next: staff will develop training content, a rollout timeline and parent/student communication materials and report back to the board.
