The Board of Estimate and Taxation voted unanimously to accept proposed amendments to the town charter (Article 14) that expand eligibility for retirement-board participant representatives.
Mr. Wacek, speaking for the retirement board, said the plan has closed to new active-membership units over the last decade and that the amendment would allow retirees and term-vested former employees to serve as participant representatives. He explained contingency language that would permit the largest bargaining units to appoint representatives if no nominees emerge, and then, if necessary, an ad hoc panel comprising the fire chief, police chief and controller would make appointments.
A law-committee review and prior discussion informed the language; the motion was moved, seconded and approved by unanimous voice vote. Board members thanked Mr. Wacek for the work on the amendment.
The accepted language will be reflected in the charter redline and clean versions and is intended to ensure the retirement board can fill participant-representative seats as plan membership dwindles.
