The Board of Estimate and Taxation approved a $142,700 appropriation to the Register of Voters, funded by the town's 2023 Election Excellence Grant, after registrars described how the funds have been spent across five tranches.
A representative of the registrars (identified on the record by role) told the BET this is the fifth and final tranche of the grant and said almost half of grant dollars were directed to "dual use" projects that support elections and other town operations. She described major election-only spending as the purchase of "40 new computers to provide real time turnout data to citizens and candidates on election day" and said the town invested in infrastructure upgrades at town hall and in schools, added security cameras and electronic badging for storage rooms, and made ADA improvements at Western Middle School and North Street School. The registrars said they had spent "almost $150,000" on ADA projects at those polling locations.
The chair noted the item was on BET now to meet grant deadline parameters rather than going through the budget committee; the board approved the appropriation by unanimous voice vote.
Board members asked practical questions about curbside voting set-up, potential overlap with candidate tables, and mapping of curbside buffers; registrars said specific sites are under review and GIS maps will inform placement to avoid overlaps with campaign areas.
