Resident and council members press Westland to protect community development funds as budget grows; police chief says Glock line item was training

During public comment and council discussion, residents and council members raised budget priorities and asked for clarity about an item on the voucher related to the police department.

Resident Mr. Warren asked whether community development funds would be expended for the John Glenn High School police liaison contract and raised a separate concern about a voucher entry in the drug forfeiture fund that referenced a Glock, asking whether it was a purchase of a new pistol or parts/repairs. "When it comes time ... looking at the monies on the community development, it doesn't seem to be so healthy," Warren said, urging council not to balance the budget on the backs of the poor.

Councilwoman Melissa Sampe said she had voted no at a prior meeting but, after further review, said the city faces an approximately $700,000 increase over the next two years and she will focus on protecting community development, police and fire services without raising taxes. Sampe also asked residents to support Lighthouse Home Mission with food donations for people staying in the overnight shelter.

Police Chief Caldelli answered that the voucher item in question was not the purchase of equipment. "There was no products purchased," Caldelli said, explaining the line covered a training/refresher course for a member whose certification was expiring; the department’s training cadre are also armorers and the training was necessary to refresh certification.

The council agreed to follow up on the voucher question if necessary and the chief offered to provide additional information later in the meeting.
