Mayor Garnto and the Garfield City Council on Jan. 27 formally swore in three new police officers — Michael John Alfonso, Thomas Sawicki and Christopher Shultz — in a ceremony that included biographical remarks and congratulations from elected officials and department leadership.
The mayor introduced each recruit, noted Alfonso’s lifelong Garfield roots and volunteer firefighting experience, described Sawicki’s criminal justice studies and local upbringing, and recounted Shultz’s military service with the Marine Corps Reserve. Each officer recited the oath of office in turn and posed for photographs with family and council members.
The chief of police thanked city leadership and families for their support and said the department will continue to recruit and expand to meet the city’s needs. Council members and family members offered brief tributes during the ceremony, contrasting the officers’ local ties and public‑service backgrounds.
The ceremony concluded with a brief recess for photographs. No formal vote was necessary for the swearing‑in; the council recessed and then resumed its regular agenda.
