The Appleton Public Arts Committee on March 4 held action on a proposal from Appleton Downtown Incorporated (ADI) to replace 36 College Avenue banners, asking the applicant to revise one design and submit one to two additional banner options that better reflect family- and community-oriented themes.
Abby, marketing director for ADI, told the committee the proposed banners were part of ADI’s "1 great place" branding and had not been updated since 2015. She said ADI worked with a local graphic design firm and planned to use the same materials and a printer experienced with the current banners. "We use the word come, and then we change along with the subhead of shop, discover, thrive," she said, describing the branding rationale.
Several committee members raised concerns about specific imagery and inclusivity. One member said image #3 could be misconstrued and asked for alternatives; others asked for greater representation of family activities, outdoor events and farmer's markets. Committee members and ADI discussed adjusting symbols and possibly replacing the arrow element in one design with alternative growth imagery.
Chair Elise Christa Michie moved to hold action and request that ADI modify banner #3 and submit one to two additional options with parameters emphasizing family- and community-oriented themes; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Staff noted the municipal services committee handles installation logistics and suggested a timeline that would allow installation in May if ADI’s modifications and committee review proceed on the proposed schedule.
Next steps: ADI to revise banner #3 and provide one to two additional banner options for review in time for the public arts committee’s packet (staff indicated mid-to-late March submission would permit an April review and subsequent municipal services consideration). Municipal services and then the council would review installation timing and operations.
