City accepts $75,000 NMFA planning grant to study effluent water reuse

Planning staff reported that the city received a $75,000 planning grant award from the New Mexico Finance Authority to pay for a preliminary engineering report studying effluent-water reuse options, including ponds, pumps, booster stations and possible reuse at the golf course and cemetery. The city must contract with an engineering firm by July and hopes the proposal will match the $75,000 award; any amount above that would be covered by local funds.
City Manager Gary Whitehead said the city produces about 600,000 gallons of wastewater per day and operates at roughly 60% of its permitted discharge of 1,000,000 gallons per day, so identifying additional reuse locations would capture opportunities for cost savings and reduced potable-water use.
A commissioner moved to accept the NMFA planning grant; the motion carried on the record. Staff will solicit engineering proposals and return with a contract recommendation.
