Sayreville council approves temporary Cultural Arts budget increase, adopts handicap-parking ordinance and advances several contracts and purchases

The Sayreville Mayor and Borough Council met in March 2026 and approved several measures affecting public safety, events and housing regulations.

The council adopted Ordinance 7-26, establishing a handicap parking space on South Edward Street, after no members of the public spoke during the hearing and a council member moved to close the public portion and adopt the ordinance on second and final reading. The council then introduced Ordinance 8-26 to update the borough’s affordable housing and development fee ordinances; the ordinance was referred to the Planning Board and a public hearing was scheduled for April 27, 2026.

A contentious debate centered on a request to increase the temporary Cultural Arts budget so the department could secure performers and vendors for summer events. Councilwoman Novak said the temporary budget "by law has to be introduced at the next meeting" and that Cultural Arts had only "$1,000" available now; she urged increasing the temporary allocation so contracts and bookings could proceed. The mayor and other council members warned that municipal procurement rules and purchase-order requirements must be followed. The mayor said exceptions risk creating "a bad precedent" and stressed that "there are simple rules of procurement" that the borough must follow.…
