Newman approves temporary transfer of a Type 3 fire engine from state emergency services

The Newman City Council on March 24 unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the city manager or designee to sign an agreement with the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services to accept a temporary transfer of a Type 3 fire engine.
City officials told the council the vehicle is a 2008 ITL Central States model 34, one of the smaller engines used for wildland and high‑water response. Staff said the apparatus is fully equipped and valued at about $272,000 and that the city’s obligations are primarily to house, maintain and insure the vehicle.
"We're getting an apparatus that's valued at almost $272,000 that we'll be able to use for our community," the presenter said, noting the engine will also be available for mutual-aid assignments. Staff added routine day-to-day maintenance costs are expected to be minimal — about up to $100 for small items such as oil changes or bulbs — and that the city will carry a liability insurance policy as required by the agreement.
A council member moved to approve the resolution and the motion passed 5-0. Staff recommended adoption so the city could bring the engine to its fleet and use it for wildland firefighting, high-water events and other emergencies, and to provide training opportunities for volunteers.
