Fanwood Police to roll out 'Safe Place' program with county partners; six businesses signed on

Fanwood's police department announced it will participate in a countywide "Safe Place" program that partners with local businesses to provide immediate shelter and support to victims of bias or hate crimes.
Police Commissioner Patricia Walsh presented the department's January summary and described the Safe Place initiative, which is a countywide effort spearheaded by the prosecutor's office and the sheriff's department. Speaker 11 said the program enables victims to enter participating businesses and call for help while receiving care and dignity from staff and responding officers.
"It gives victims of bias or hate crimes a safe place to go to after their incident," Speaker 11 said. The program will display small stickers in windows of participating businesses; Speaker 11 said six businesses had signed on and more had given verbal commitments.
The borough posted the program information on Facebook and will distribute literature to participating sites. Officials said the program is being coordinated through the county prosecutor and sheriff and will include materials for businesses and outreach to residents.
The police report also summarized January activity: the department handled 1,051 calls for service, including traffic enforcement and building checks, 46 park-and-walk details and two adult arrests for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and an outstanding warrant.
