Piscataway board adopts 2026 goals after debate over SMART targets and timelines

The Piscataway Township Board of Education adopted its 2026 board goals at the March 25 meeting after a lengthy discussion about specificity, timelines and administrative capacity.
Board member Mr. Patel proposed phrasing changes to make the goals SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound), offering sample language such as, "By June 2026, the board will receive two public reports from the administration on student wellness indicators, including attendance, discipline, climate survey results, and counseling utilization." Board members expressed support for stronger metrics but some officials, including the superintendent, cautioned that fixed deadlines may require coordination with administration so the reports can be substantive and feasible.
Superintendent Glover told the board, "I will commit that my administration will work with the board to ensure that in order for the board to meet their goals, we will do our best to support and provide supporting documentation," and noted limitations around producing some detailed reports on the boardtimeline without planning time.
The board agreed to add a community-inclusion provision to goal number five that reads in part: "The board is committed to creating inclusive opportunities for community members to participate in the growth and development of the district, such as allowing public members to serve on board committees, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued." The motion to adopt the goals passed by roll call vote.
Board members said the goals will guide board professional development, community engagement and transparency efforts over the coming year; the board also noted the goals are intended to be a one-year framework that can be adjusted as administration and the board align on timelines and reporting requirements.
