Commission staff updated the Little Park Historical Preservation Commission on train car 321 and asked commissioners to help with signage research and historical materials.
Staff said the village submitted a permit application to DuPage County for the proposed location and is awaiting a decision. The car, built in 1914, will require interior work, a new roof connection and signage; staff requested volunteers to research the Chicago Aurora & Elgin line history, the car’s service dates and draft a short blurb for an on-site sign and social-media promotion, preferably by early summer.
In public comment, Sheryl Tucker asked who would be responsible for fundraising, interior repairs and ongoing maintenance once the car is in place. Chair responded that many volunteer groups and organizations are contributing now and that “at this point, it becomes the village” and the village would serve as the coordinating umbrella once the project is transferred to village control.
Commissioners asked whether the selected site had been evaluated for drainage and noted the packet included two attachments and emails with project partners; one commissioner asked whether the commission would be a formal partner with Illinois Prairie Path or whether the listing was a general partnership of participating organizations. Staff said the project lists Villa Park, the Villa Park Historical Society, the Illinois Railway Museum and Illinois Prairie Path among participating groups and encouraged commissioners to volunteer for signage and research.
Commissioners also offered to locate period photographs to guide restoration and confirmed the slide colors shown at the meeting are intended as the period-appropriate color scheme for the restored car. Staff said volunteers and interested commissioners can follow up by email to receive attachments and further details.
