Resident Stacy Bridges urges Marseilles to ban kratom after husband’s suspected kratom-related fall

Stacy Bridges, a Marseilles resident, told the City Council that her husband, Christian Keener, fell from a bridge eight weeks ago and has not been found. “We believe he was on Kratom, which is legal in Marseilles,” Bridges said, and asked the council to ban the sale of the substance in town.
Bridges thanked the police, fire and search-and-rescue teams for their efforts and said the waiting has been “horrible” for her family. “If we could get it banned in Marseilles, it would mean the world to me and his family,” she said.
Commissioner Melissa Small responded that an ordinance to ban kratom is being drafted and that the item will appear on the next council agenda. “Also, Stacy, just to let you know, the next agenda, we will have the kratom ban ordinance. It is currently being drafted and finalized right now,” Small said, offering the council’s condolences and describing the planned process.
Council members did not vote on the matter at the meeting; Small’s comments indicated the council will consider a local ordinance at a future session. The announcement came amid other public-safety and infrastructure updates the council discussed during the meeting.
Next steps: the council indicated the kratom-ban ordinance is being drafted and will be placed on an upcoming agenda for formal consideration and any ensuing vote.
